HFC Refrigerants

HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) are non ozone depleting and the preferred refrigerant in a wide range new refrigeration and air conditioning installations.  These refrigerants are non-flammable, safe, easy to use, and energy efficient in the correct application.  The choice of refrigerant is usually made by the equipment manufacturer and will be dependent on the application and required operating conditions.



R-434A

APPLICATION: Refirgeration

R125

R125 is a single component non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant,  It has the potential to be used in some low temperature applications but R125 is more commonly used as a component in other HFC blends.

R125 is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oil - see our Lubricants section for further information.

R508B

R508B is an azeotropic blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R23 and R116).  It has similar properties to R503 and is used for very low temperature applications, such as environmental test chambers and medical freezers.  Although R508B is an azeotrope, we recommend it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.  R508B is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oil - see our Lubricants section.

R508B can also be used to retrofit existing systems containing R503, however it will be necessary to change the oil to POE.

R507

R507 is a azeotropic blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R125 and R143a).  It has similar properties and characteristics to R502 and R404A and can be used in similar applications at medium and low temperatures, typically industrial process chilling.  Although R507 is classed as an azeotrope, we recommend that it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.  R507 is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oils - see our Lubricants section.

R507 has the potential to be used to retrofit some existing R22 pump circulation or flooded evaporator systems, however, it will be necessary to change the oil to a POE and some component changes may also be necessary.  Any such conversion needs to be fully evaluated before proceeding, taking into account the properties of R507.  R507 may be used to retrofit existing R502 systems, however it is necessary to change the oil to POE.

R438A (ISCEON® MO99)

R438A is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant blend.  It is ideally suited as an R22 replacement for all air conditioning and chiller applications with performance, capacity, mass flow and pressure characteristics a close match for R22.  It has advantages over R422D where the expansion valve has a fixed orifice or is closely sized to the capacity of the system, whilst it has better capacity compared to R417A.

This product is compatible with traditional and new lubricants, providing a quick, easy and cost effective retrofit, and can be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R438A is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R437A (ISCEON® MO49 PLUS)

R437A is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC retrofit refrigerant blend of R134a, R125, R600, and R601.  This product is suitable to replace refrigerants that replaced R12 in automotive, stationary air conditioning, and direct expansion medium temperature stationary refrigeration systems.  It is an ideal replacement for HCFC containing blends R401A/B and R409A/B.

R437A provides better cooling capacity and comparable energy efficiency to R12 but with lower discharge temperatures.  It provides a quick, easy and cost effective retrofit and in most cases no change of oil is required as it is comparable with traditional and new lubricants.  This product can easily be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R437A is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R423A (ISCEON® 39TC)

R423A is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC retrofit refrigerant blend of R134a and R227ea developed to replace R12 in centrifugal chillers.  It provides similar cooling capacity and comparable energy efficiency when compared to R12, with similar discharge pressures and temperatures. 

R423A provides a quick, easy and cost effective retrofit typically requiring a single lubricant change to Polyol Ester without the need for flushing.  It avoids the expensive engineering changes required to convert existing chiller equipment to R134a.  This product can be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R423A is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R422D (ISCEON® MO29)

R422D is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant blend of R125, R134a and R600a.  It is used to replace R22 in a wide variety of high, medium and low temperature refrigeration applications, as well as air conditioning and water chiller systems.  It has also been used in new equipment and selected "flooded" applications. 

R422D is a close match to R22 in terms of capacity and efficiency in most systems, but with a significantly lower discharge temperature which may prolong the life of the compressor.  This product is compatible with traditional and new lubricants, providing easy, quick and cost effective retrofits and can be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R422D is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R422A (ISCEON® MO79)

R422A is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant blend of R125, R134a and R600a.  It is typically used to replace R22, R502 and blends such as R402A, R403B, and R408A in medium and low temperature refrigeration systems.  This product has a significantly lower discharge temperature compared to R22, and improved cooling capacity with a gain of up to 15% at low temperature conditions.

R422A is compatible with traditional and new lubricants, providing a quick, easy and cost effective retrofit.  It has lower global warming potential that R404A ad R507, and can be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R422A is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R417A (ISCEON® MO59)

R417A is an easy to use, non-ozone depleting HFC retrofit refrigerant blend of R125, R134a and R600.  It is typically used to replace R22 in direct expansion stationary air conditioning and medium temperature refrigeration systems. 

R417A has a significantly lower discharge temperature than R22, which may prolong the life of the compressor.  In most systems this product provides the required cooling capacity and has shown energy savings, however some systems may experience reduced capacity.  This refrigerant is compatible with traditional and new lubricants, providing quick, easy and cost effective retrofits, and can be topped up during service without removing the entire refrigerant charge.  As R417A is a blend, is should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.

R410A

R410A is a blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R32 and R125).  New equipment has been designed specifically to take advantage of its properties such as higher cooling capacity and negligible temperature glide.  It has become increasingly popular in many air conditioning and heat pump systems and in many applications is now preferred to R407C.  R410A equipment is usually more energy efficient. 

Engineers should ensure they are equipped with the correctly rated gauges for R410A.  Although R410A is sometimes referred to as an azeotrope, we recommend that it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging a system.  R410A is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend the use of a Polyol Ester (POE) oil - see our Lubricants section for further information.  R410A should not be used to retrofit existing R22 systems as they are not designed for the higher operating pressures of R410A.

R407F (Performax™ LT)

Performax LT (R407F) is a zeotropic blend of HFCs, intended for low and medium temperature commercial refrigeration applications.  It improves upon and can replace R404A in new and existing installations.

Performax LT increases the system's energy efficiency, allowing you to reduce energy consumption and lessen the overall impact on the environment.

R407C

R407C is a blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R32, R125 and R134a).  It has similar properties and characteristics to R22 and is used across a wide variety of air conditioning applications.  It is widely used for splits, VRF and direct expansion water chillers.  As R407C is a blend it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.  R407C is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oil - see our Lubricants section for more information.

R407C can be used to retrofit some existing R22 air conditioning systems, however, it will be necessary to carry out a number of oil flushes when changing to a POE oil.

R407A

R407A is a blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R32, R125 and R134a),  It has similar properties and characteristics to R22 in some applications but should not be confused with R407C.  It is typically used for refrigeration applications and offers a lower GWP alternative to R404A.  As R407A is a blend, it should always be removed from the cylinder as a liquid when charging the system.  R407C is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oil - see our Lubricants section for further information.

R407A may also be used to retrofit certain systems, however, it is rarely the first choice as multiple oil changes to a POE is required.

R404A

R404A is a blend of non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerants (R125, R143a and R134a).  It has similar properties and characteristics to R502 and is used in both medium and low temperature applications.  It is widely used for commercial refrigeration applications, including display cabinets, cold rooms and ice machines, as well as transport refrigeration and industrial refrigeration.  As R404A is a blend, it should always be removed from the system as liquid when charging the system.

R404A is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oils, see more in our Lubricants section.  R404A may also be used to retrofit certain existing systems, however it is rarely the first choice as multiple oil changes to a POE is required.

R134a

R-134a is a single-component non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant.  Until quite recently, it has been the refrigerant of choice for automotive air conditioning applications (see also R-1234yf).  It is typically a medium temperature refrigerant used in large chiller applications and some commercial refrigeration applications, as well as transport refrigeration.  R-134a is also used as a component in other HFC blends.

R-134a is not compatible with mineral oil, and equipment manufacturers recommend Polyol Ester (POE) oil except for automotive air conditioning where Poly Alkylene glycol (PAG) oil is preferred.  See our Lubricants section for more information.  R-134a can be used to retrofit existing R-401A and R-409A systems, however it will be necessary to carry out a number of oil flushes when changing to POE oil.
