Opteon XP44 (R-452A) - a lower GWP alternative to R-404A for transport refrigeration applications

Climalife UK have added Opteon® XP44 (R-452A) to its range of refrigerants and the product is available and in stock now.  Opteon® XP44 is a non-ozone depleting, low Global Warming Potential (GWP) hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) based refrigerant that has been developed as a replacement option for R-404A in low and medium temperature transport refrigeration applications.

Opteon® XP44 is suitable for use in new equipment as well as for the retrofit of existing systems, offering comparable energy efficiency and capacity, whilst maintaining similar compressor discharge temperatures to R-404A. It is reported that there is no loss of performance and reliability in terms of refrigeration capacity, pull-down and fuel efficiency.

Opteon® XP44 offers a 45% reduction in GWP values compared to R-404A according to Assessment Report 4 (AR4) which is used by EU F-Gas Regulation 517/2014, and has already been approved and adopted by major equipment manufacturers of transport refrigeration units.

Thermo King announced in September 2014 their intention to replace R-404A with Opteon® XP44 (R-452A), whilst Carrier Transicold announced in April 2015 it is available as option.

Opteon® XP44 (R452A) is miscible with POE lubricants and can be topped up after leaks.  With an ASHRAE classification of A1, Opteon® XP44 is safe and non-flammable.
