The Hazardous Waste Regulations have been in place in England and Wales since 2005, with some minor modifications in subsequent years. Under these regulations CFC, HCFC and HFC refrigerants are classified as Hazardous waste when they are recovered from a system.
It is a legal requirement for companies handling waste to register themselves, and enforcement bodies regularly carry out spot checks on businesses carrying waste to confirm whether they have registered. Registration bodies differ for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales so it is important registration is made with the correct authority for the operating location.

All hazardous waste movements must use consignment notes which must stay with the hazardous waste until it reaches its final destination. Climalife can assist with the consignment note process.
The complexities of the withdrawal of the UK from the EU (Brexit) agreement mean that in accordance with Article 16 of the retained EU regulation EU 517/2014, movements of F-Gas waste from Northern Ireland to the rest of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales) will require the importer to have sufficient Great Britain (GB) F-Gas quota if they are importing 100TCO2e or more of F-Gases per annum. F-Gas Waste transfers from the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man will also be subject to the same GB F-Gas quota requirements.
