INGENIUM chooses Solstice® N40 for loading bay of logistics warehouse

The customer wanted to be able to store fresh products delivered by sea in compliance with environmental regulations, and was fully satisfied with INGENIUM solution.

Russian company "INGENIUM" designs complex engineering systems, prepares design documents, produces, delivers and installs refrigeration systems of varied complexities. Industrial refrigeration equipment is manufactured on its own premises in Rostov-on-Don, a city in southern Russia.

INGENIUM General Manager, Mr Christophore Dzhibgashvili, confirms :

«Our priority is to be very focused on the task briefed by the customer and we find unique approaches to our solutions.»

In 2020, INGENIUM supplied the warehouse complex with refrigeration systems for a big logistics company, a world leader in sea container transportation. The company has over 80,000 employees across 130 countries. Their project focused on a warehouse complex for cooled and frozen products storage in the port of Saint Petersburg.

Working in partnership, the customer asked INGENIUM for a technical solution specific to the design format of their warehouse. During the development phase, one option considered was to find a solution that used CO2 as a refrigerant. CO2 technology would allow for a significant reduction in future operating costs whilst also removing potential issues in terms of restrictive measures.

Russia is moving towards environmental standards following the adoption of the Kigali amendment. The solution was accepted by the client. At the project planning stage, the client made additional requirements regarding the configuration of the warehouse - they needed to cool the loading bay, for the loading and unloading of goods. The area needed to be cooled to -5°C. Various environmental compliance options were considered.

One of them was to use Solstice® N40 (R-448A) for the independent refrigeration circuit in the loading bay. Climalife, the refrigerant supplier, provided the necessary technical support. The benefit of using this refrigerant is its lower GWP compared to R-507A, which is still largely used in Russia for similar applications.

Solution

INGENIUM offered the Optima + compressor and condensing units from Danfoss.

These are compact systems with a good aesthetic appearance, making it possible to place them in the area next to the loading bay doors, which cools the air in the entrance to the low temperature chamber.

The units are designed to reduce the amount of moisture entering the chamber, as they protect the air in this zone, and therefore the moisture that is sucked from outside settles as much as possible on the air coolers in the entrance.

Testimonial

«The use of R-448A for this zone was led by the need to minimise costs and the customer's requirement to comply with environmental regulations - they are looking to the future in terms of stopping using HFCs with high GWP»,

explained Alexander Nadeev, Head of Integrated Projects.

The units operate independently of the entire system, with intermittent switching on and start up as needed, during loading and unloading in the cooling area and when the outside temperature is higher than -5°C. Correct calculation of the project has helped to significantly reduce the energy costs of the cooling system, thus reducing operating costs and shortening the payback period of this investment project. For air coolers it was decided to use a system for defrosting electric fuel elements. There were no problems filling the equipment with R-448A refrigerant.

INGENIUM arried out a full cycle of works on the production, installation and commissioning of equipment for the cooling
of the warehouse complex.
